The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition is a large-scale international contest sponsored by Hanban, and is well-known in the cultural and educational exchanges worldwide. It consists of 3 events: “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign High School Students and “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students in China. The competition is held yearly, organized and carried out by Hanban.
This years competition which was held in University of Nairobi on 5th May saw many talented Chinese students display what they have been preparing for months on end. The competition was hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, and co-sponsored by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Nairobi and the Confucius Institute Headquarters Hanban.
The preliminary round was divided into three parts:
- Making a speech on My Chinese Story, in which contestants shared their stories associated with Chinese language.
- Talent show.
- Q&A on Chinese culture and China-Kenya friendship, in which contestants answered questions including the Kenya’s Vision 2030 project on the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, and the on holding “R&B” International Cooperation Summit Forum to be held on 14 May 2017, in Beijing
The competition’s winner was Miss Hilda Akoth Juma who will represent Kenya in the world final which will be held in China. The Counselor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Kenya who was also the chairman of the panel of judges in the preliminary competition, Mr. Yao Ming congratulated the winners after the completion, and had a speech to say “the effort is the key factor to success, as the hope of country’s future, young students shall contribute on cooperation and communications”
While the First and Second positions were taken by Nairobi University Confucius Institute, Kenyatta University Confucius Institute’s Moses Njihia Njuguna was at third place. Other students were Caleb Mwongela and Diana Wanjiku.
