Albert has been working at OPPO for some time now. He is an excellent, fluent Chinese speaker and has been to China. Antsmobile Company, as it is registered in Kenya has offered many opportunities to many Chinese speakers as it seeks to expand its business foothold in Kenya. What gives you the motivation to wake up each morning?
The fact that i can assist people in their work and help them achieve.
What can you say is the best aspect of what you do?
I get to work with awesome people and meet new ones every day
Which is the best day since you started working here?
My best day was when i was posted to a new region (Western and Nyanza) . Here we were to establish our new market and the opportunity to be a pioneer for Oppo in this area was incredible. I got to meet alot of people, learn alot and got exposure to the smartphone industry.
How did Chinese language help you land you here?
Through the Chinese language i got to meet many colleagues who have helped get new opportunities.
How has been your Chinese language changed since you started working?
Exposure to the translation world gives one confidence and your spoken Chinese does greatly improve the more you interact with fellow translators and Chinese people.
What part of Chinese Culture do you find interesting in the workplace?
Part of our company’s culture is no excuses. It doesn’t matter what, so long as something is wrong you take full responsibility if it was your part to play without any excuse.
In the way Chinese do business/work what can Kenya learn?
The commitment in the Chinese people when it comes to their work is surely something to be admired.
Did Chinese enhance your career or did you find a new career in Chinese?
I found a new career in Chinese.
What do you like most when working in a Chinese related field?
The fact that i get to use a language that i studied hard at and also a language i love.
Any future plans in 5 years? For how long you will you be here?
My plans for the future have a great involment in the Chinese language. I do plan to stay in this company for a while, a long while.
Any special colleague (Chinese/Local) whom you think deserves a mention and has helped you in your Chinese language?
The Confucius institute at Kenyatta university gave me a platform to mould my career and without doubt is the best institute for Chinese related studies.
Finally, a parting statement for anyone aspiring to be at your position?
Have focus. Know your worth. Understand others and most of all be fair.
