The 2017 16th Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition’s preliminary round took place on Monday 27th February at the Chinese Culture Experience Centre, Alumni Building – Kenyatta University, organised by the Confucius Institute at Kenyatta University. The Chinese Bridge Proficiency Competition provides an opportunity for elementary, beginners and advanced students to express their Chinese proficiency, knowledge and talents while encouraging them in their pursuit of learning Chinese language and Chinese culture.
Students are tested on their proficiency in Chinese speaking and understanding of China’s history and culture. Competitors also perform a talent related to Chinese language or culture (music, dance, theatrical performance, etc.) as part of their presentation.
The event saw students display their speech and talent show before a panel that included Chinese teachers led by Chinese Director: Professor Li and the local Director: Dr. Wango
College students with foreign nationalities, aged between 18 and 30 and overseas-born, whose first language is not Chinese.
2. Participation Process
(1) Preliminary Rounds
The educational or cultural offices of Chinese Embassies (Consulates) or Confucius Institutes organise the overseas preliminary competitions, select and recommend contestants to attend the semi-finals held in China. Each contest region can also recommend one outstanding contestant to come to China to view the competition.
(2) Semi-finals and Final Round
In each July, the semi-final round selects the players for the final round through testing their Chinese language proficiency, knowledge about China, Chinese cultural talents, etc. The final round results in the special award and the first, second and third place winners as well as the single award winners through elimination competitions. Please go to the Chinese Bridge — Official Chinese Competition website for detailed information.
Many students participated but only 8 were chosen to move to the semi finals which shall be a month from now. The chosen 8 will undergo specialised training from the Chinese teachers and then face the panel for another performance to see the best 4. The training will be both for speech and talent shows. The best 4 will represent Kenyatta University Confucius Institute at Nairobi University for the National finals.
I wish the students all the best as we start this journey to Nairobi University and then to China. This shall be my last time to participate in this competition. Am hoping to make it to China this time. Last year’s event saw me eliminated at the National levels in Nairobi University.
