Fujian Province Tour Day 4 – WuYiShan (武夷山)

The Wuyi Mountains are located between Wuyishan City, Nanping prefecture in Fujian province and Wuyishan Town, at Shangrao city in Jiangxi province. The mountains have been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site,for cultural, scenic, and biodiversity values since 1999. The Wuyi Mountains are the largest and most representative example of Chinese subtropical forests and South Chinese rainforests‘ biodiversity. Its ecology has survived from before the Ice Age around 3 million years ago. Biologists have been conducting field research in the area since 1873.

We arrived at Wu Yi Shan Railway station after a long grueling 14hrs on the K-Train from Xiamen. The night wasn’t so good as the train kept rocking back and forth as it slithered into the country side. However the clean pollution-free air of WuYi Shan is a great reward for those who live in Nanjing.

A raft trip down the Nine-bend River is the most popular activity followed by a visit to the “Thread of Sky” caves, where the narrowest walkway is only 30 cm. Also climbing the mountain and breathing the clean air is a must for all visitors to the area. Here are some interesting pictures.

The WuYiShan Township is small and mostly a tourist town. Here you can buy souvenirs at a bargain if you can speak good Mandarin

..and the ladies are very beautiful. The round object she is holding is actually Chinese local tea.

On the mountain there are several such sites of praying to gods and good luck wishes.

This ancient custom of supporting a tilted sick on a huge rock with a 5Mao Note is still practiced. Its meant to bring good fortune

Today was very tiring and as we went back to the hotel, the bus was silent, everybody dead asleep. What a day. Tomorrow the guide said we shall return to the mountain area and also check out some museums.
